Summer Inspired Knitting Projects

Let’s get ready for summer knitting.

1. Lace Shawls or Wraps

Shawls are for all seasons including into summer. Lightweight yarn, summer colours and lace knitting patterns are the top choices. Choose circular knitting needles in the right size as they will accommodate the stitches for the shawl. Vibrant shades of yarn look impressive even in the basic garter or stockinette patterns. Lace knitting patterns can create stunning works of art that will be admired by all who see them and look perfect for the warm weather. You can also experiment with shawl and warp shapes and try out triangular design or ruffles at the edges instead of the regular rectangular construction.

2. Cowls or Cardigans in Condo Knitting

Cowls and cardigans can also work for summers. For a lighter knitted fabric, condo knitting is a good technique to start with. The knitters with years of experience will know how the knitting technique was a fashion statement in the 60s and 70s and is making a comeback. For beginners, to simply explain it means knitting a garter pattern with two knitting needles of different sizes in alternating rows. This will ensure that your knitted fabric has a unique look.

You cast on stitches with the smaller needle say for example a 4mm knitting needle. Knit a row or round with the same needle and then for the next row or round take the bigger needle for example 6mm or even more. Continue alternating till you’ve completed the project. Mark the different rows and round in different stitch markers to help you with reference to the change in the pattern.

Circulars, especially interchangeable knitting needles are the perfect choice. You can switch the knitting needle size and work with back and forth as well as in the round knitting with the same pair of needles. Single pointed needles each of a different size can also be used. If you are just starting do not attempt to knit with double pointed needles.

3. Tees

Tees are ideal for summer. You can get really creative with vibrant yarns, patterns of leaves and flowers. If you want to work with basic garter or stockinette you can still make your project special with the colour palate. Use knitting needles according to the project. Circulars and double pointed needles will have a seamless project while with single points you can knit the garment in pieces and then seam them together.

4. Shrugs & Cardigans

Shrugs and Cardigans are similar in pattern with different lengths and design elements. If you have knitted a sweater previously, you can easily go ahead with a basic shrug or cardigan. Knit a gauge swatch first. This way you’ll have an idea of how the pattern will look and how much yarn will be needed. Use some lace patterns for the neck part or the bottom to give them a delightful summer look.

5. Headbands

Cute headbands are great summer accessories. Make your outfit extra special and style your hair with headbands. You can knit one with any single pointed needle and then seam it together. Circulars and double points will have a circumference. If you have lots of yarn stash in different shades, cast on a headband. Any simple garter or stocking stitch pattern will look beautiful.

Besides the above project ideas, you can also make socks and hats in bright shades. If you feeling adventurous, a summer bag too is a great idea.

Happy Summer knitting!
