The warmth and comfort of a homemade blanket can be a delightful addition to your home, providing a handmade charm and cozy atmosphere to your space during the colder months. If you're a crochet enthusiast, you're in for a treat! In this blog post, we'll create a beautiful, snug, beginner-friendly blanket. Stay hooked for knowing the process.

Crochet Winter Granny Stitch Blanket

The Granny Stitch is a classic, versatile crochet pattern that involves clusters of three double crochet stitches separated by chain spaces. Each row builds a textured, open design, starting with a foundation chain. The stitch's simplicity allows for versatility in creating blankets, scarves, and more. With its charming repetition, the Granny Stitch transforms yarn into a beautiful art piece, making it a favorite among crocheters.

Materials Needed for Your Project

●     Warm and bulky yarn suitable for winter (recommended: worsted weight or higher)

●     Choose a crochet hook appropriate for the chosen yarn (check the yarn label for the recommended hook size). Wooden crochet hooks are best for winter as they offer a warm grip.

●     Scissors

●     Yarn needle for weaving in ends

Abbreviations:

Ch: chain

Notes:

This beginner-friendly blanket starts with 180 stitches. You can increase the width by adding more stitches in multiples of 3 (e.g., Ch 192 stitches plus 1).

Instructions:

Foundation Chain:

Ch 180 stitches on a single ended crochet hook or any other, whichever you choose, plus 1 and turn.

Row 1: Single Crochet Base:

SC in each stitch across.

Ch 2 and turn.

Row 2: Creating Texture with Double Crochet (DC):

Work 1 DC in the second stitch from the end.

Skip the next 2 stitches, and work 3 DC in the next stitch (we'll call this a "DC Set" from here on out). Repeat this pattern across until the last 4 stitches.

Skip 2 stitches, and work 1 DC in the last 2 stitches.

Ch 2 and turn.

Row 3: Adding Volume with DC Sets:

Work a "DC Set" across each gap until the last two stitches.

Skip 1 stitch, and work 1 DC in the last stitch.

Ch 2 and turn.

Row 4: Continuing the Pattern:

Work 1 DC in the first stitch of the DC set from the previous row.

Work a "DC Set" in each gap across until the last 4 stitches.

Skip 2 stitches, and work 1 DC in the last 2 stitches.

Repeat Rows 3 and 4:

Keep repeating Rows 3 and 4 until you reach your desired length for the blanket.

Finishing Touches

Complete your project with a final row of single crochets for a polished edge. Weave in any loose ends with a yarn needle to ensure a neat finish.

This project offers a chance to practice basic stitches while creating a beautiful, cozy blanket for chilly winter nights.

Crafting with the Right Tools

Explore the variety of crochet hooks available to enhance your crochet experience. For larger projects like blankets, opting for a hook with an ergonomic design ensures comfort during extended periods of crocheting. Size-wise, a larger hook, such as a Tunisian crochet hook, complements the bulkier yarn typically used for blankets, facilitating quicker progress. A smooth and sturdy material, like aluminum or wood, helps manage the tension and prevents hand fatigue. You can also opt for double ended crochet hooks.

Embrace the joy of crafting and stay warm all winter with your crocheted winter blanket. If you want to explore more patterns, then do take a look at this blog.
