Techniques of Crocheting - What to Know

Crochet is a calming and versatile hobby. So you can design the most beautiful clothes, accessories, decoration and many other creative ideas yourself with just a crochet hook and wool. Would you also like to learn to crochet? Then you are in the right place here in our blog. Here we show you the techniques and basics for crocheting.

First of all, you should get yarn and a crochet hook. You can get the best crochet hooks for beginners at Knitpro.

Chain

The chain stitch is the simplest of the crochet stitches and at the same time the most important basis. You usually need this stitch at the beginning of a crochet piece as the first round, at the beginning of a new round as a turning chain stitch or when crocheting chain stitch loops.

Chain Bow

Your crochet project can either start with a chain of chain stitches as described above, or with a ring of chain stitches. Chain stitches are closed with a slip stitch to form a ring. This chain stitch ring is used when crocheting hats, baskets or amigurumi.

Slip Stitch

The slip stitch is often used to finish the round. It connects the first stitch to the last. It is very flat and stable and therefore perfect for a clean finish. It is also often used to connect granny squares. You crochet a slip stitch simply: Insert your hook into the next stitch, getting the thread and simply pulling it through completely.

Single crochet

These stitches are the most commonly used stitches in crocheting. No matter which project it is, there are always single crochet involved. These simple but important stitches are crocheted as follows: Insert your hook into the next stitch, get the yarn and pull it through the stitch. You now have two stitches on your needle. Yarn over again and pull through both loops. Your single crochet is ready. This stitch is particularly strong and durable, which is why it is often used for amigurumis.

Double crochet

In contrast to single crochet, double crochet are more airy. The crocheted piece becomes looser. For a double crochet, yarn over your hook, insert your hook into the next stitch, pull up a loop, yarn over again and now pull through 2 loops. Now you have 2 more loops on your hook. Yarn over again and pull through the last 2 loops.

Half double crochet

This stitch is the same as a double crochet, just half of it. Here's how to crochet it: Yarn over, insert your hook into the next stitch, yarn over again and now pull through all of the loops.

Increase

To increase stitches while crocheting, crochet the respective stitch in your pattern into one stitch twice, for example 2 single crochet into the next stitch.

Decrease

Just as increasing stitches is important, it is also important to decrease stitches to give your crochet the desired shape. Here two stitches are made into one and this is how it works: Insert the next stitch and get the thread. Now do that with a second stitch. Now you must have 3 stitches on your needle. Yarn over and pull through all three loops.
